Palliative Care Career Pathways for Music Therapists

If you are a music therapist and interested in a career in palliative care, jobs are available through most palliative home-based and inpatient care centres throughout Melbourne.

Potentially, music therapy jobs may be created throughout Australian palliative care services, however, this depends on the availability of music therapists and their negotiations with palliative care managers.

Many music therapy positions in Melbourne palliative care services were created through music therapists approaching managers for pilot funding.

Music therapists registered with the Australian Music Therapy Association may work in managerial (Class 3 or 4) roles with some clinical duties, or predominantly clinical roles (Class 1 & 2).  Increasingly, palliative care music therapists are also becoming involved in research.

Any music therapist interested in further study in palliative care may consider The Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care, which is accredited with the University of Melbourne and aims to become the industry standard for health professionals (all disciplines) working in services that provide palliative care.

Please visit University of Melbourne for further information on the Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care.

Music therapists interested in post graduate research in palliative care may consider contacting:

The National Music Therapy Research Unit within the Faculty of VCA & Music, Master of Music Therapy, University of Melbourne

Music therapists may also contact the Australian Music Therapy Association, Victoria, for information about the Palliative Care Special Interest Group.
