Palliative Care Career Pathways for Occupational Therapists

If you are an Occupational Therapist and interested in a career in palliative care, the development opportunities are as follows:

Grade 1 and 2

Grade 1 and 2 Occupational Therapists seeking to work in palliative care, or who care for palliative care patients at some time in the course of their usual work:

  • We recommend you undertake ‘Palliative Care:  The Essentials’.  This two-day program has been designed for all health professionals who currently work, or are seeking to work, in palliative care.  The program is an ideal orientation to palliative care.  Further information can be obtained from the 2011 Specialist Certificate Courses brochure.
  • Join the OT Australia Victoria, Special Interest Group – Oncology and Palliative Care
  • Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach (PEPA) provides a broad range of health care professionals with the opportunity to increase their experience, knowledge and skills in palliative care.  Further information can be found on The Palliative Care Victoria website.

Senior Clinician/Grade 3 in Palliative Care

Senior Occupational Therapists working in palliative care or who have a significant case load of palliative care patients in the course of their usual work:

Postgraduate courses for you to consider include:

  • The Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care which is accredited with the University of Melbourne and aims to become the industry standard for health professionals (all disciplines) working in services that provide palliative care.  Please see this link for further information and contact details.
