About the Program

Aim

The aim of the VPCNPC is to assist with the development, support and mentorship of Palliative Care Nurse Practitioners in Victoria.

Goals

The goals of the VPCNPC are to:

  • Provide recommendations regarding core clinical skills and scope of practice
  • Develop resources to support the training of NP candidates, including the provision of:
    • information regarding palliative care drug formulary
    • clinical guidelines fact sheets and case studies
    • 'mock' NP examinations
    • training on presentation skills
    • training in understanding and promoting evidence-based palliative care (writing articles for publication, ethics, grant proposals)
  • Assist in the provision of support via a recognised palliative care NP and specialist palliative care physician mentorship program

  • Establish a support and networking initiative that:

    • Facilitates group learning amongst NP candidates
    • Facilitates sharing of educational resources
    • Provides forums for advice and comment on key issues
    • Provides updates on the progress of NP models
    • Provides opportunities for sustainable networking at a local, national and international level
    • Uses information technology including website, newsletters and social networking forums
  • Develop a communication strategy

  • Formally evaluate outcomes of the collaborative

Advisors

Metropolitan

Two nurse practitioner advisors, service managers and medical officers from MCM and Banksia, approx 2hrs each service per week with a metropolitan focus (contact details outlined below).

Rural

Karen Glaetzer – South Australian Palliative Care NP

Karen's main focus is advice for rural NP services and NP candidates. Karen is also a member of Collaborative management group with a time commitment of approximately 4 hours per week.

Dr Mark Boughey – Director Palliative Medicine and Deputy Director, Centre for Palliative Care, St Vincent's Hospital.

Mark's main focus is advice for rural NP services and collaborating with metropolitan services with their established medical networks. Mark is also a member of the Collaborative management group with a time commitment of approximately 3 hours per week. Please note: Mark's role does not entail day to day clinical management or advice for patients of participating services.
