Palliative Care Research Network (Victoria)

The Palliative Care Research Network Victoria (PCRNV) is an exciting initiative which received funding for three years, in 2010, from the Victorian Cancer Agency (VCA).  It is the result of extensive consultation across the clinical and research fields of palliative care, which showed the development of a state-wide research network was overwhelmingly supported.

The core purpose of the PCRNV is to work towards developing a platform for sustainable, state-wide research collaboration, one which is based on a priority-driven and clinically-relevant research agenda.  The key project objectives for the first year are to:

  1. Develop a governance and management structure for the network; and
  2. Determine the major research projects to be conducted via the network and develop a full proposal for independent, scientific review.

The broad research theme for the PCRNV is “Factors influencing place of care and place of death for patients/carers in the last phase of life.”

The establishment of the PCRNV is an important move forward for research in palliative care.  It has been made possible by many individuals who have committed their time and expertise in gaining substantial funding for the next 12 months, with the potential to extend for a further two years.

The PCRNV will be led by the Centre for Palliative Care in partnership with key personnel and representatives from major Victorian institutions.
