End of Life Care and Care Pathways in Victoria Project

The Victorian End-of-life Care Pathways Co-ordinating Program (VEC) has been established in response to the End-of-Life Care and Care Pathways in Victoria report  published May 2011. The Victorian Department of Health is funding the program under the Strengthening Palliative Care policy and the Centre for Palliative Care (CPC), Melbourne, will run the program as a pilot over 18 months.

VEC Will:

  • Act as the key contact point for activity related to the adoption of end-of-life care pathways across the state of Victoria and provide a coordinated, centralised approach.

  • Act on behalf of and in collaboration with Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute Liverpool (MCPCIL) in relation to the adoption of, and compliance with, Liverpool Care Pathway documentation in Victoria

  • Assist with planning, implementing and evaluating end-of-life care pathways across Victorian health care settings, including aged care.

  • Coordinate the Victorian state-wide End-of-Life Care Pathway Special Interest Group and establish a sector-wide communication strategy

  • Develop workshops to facilitate communication with services interested in implementing an end-of-life care pathway.

  • Establish opportunities for clinicians implementing end-of-life care pathways to share experiences.

  • Promote benchmarking between services.

  • Establish a databank of end-of-life care pathway projects in Victoria

It is hoped that this pilot program will lead to Victoria being recognised as a Level 3 International Partner with Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute Liverpool (MCPCIL).
