Topic 1:  What is palliative care?

Objective:  To inform carers about palliative care.

The content offered in Topic 1 will focus on defining palliative care:

• Begin with asking “What do you think Palliative Care is?” and document answers on the whiteboard
• Define palliative care (refer to page 7 of the guidebook)
• Describe the goals of palliative care:
  • Family centred support
  • Symptom management
  • Terminal care
  • Psychological, social and spiritual care
  • Bereavement support.
